The Donkey Sanctuary has a fully equipped veterinary hospital designed specifically for treating donkeys.
From years of working with donkeys, the veterinary staff are able to disseminate their knowledge widely by running continuing professional development (CPD) courses, lecturing worldwide at veterinary conferences and providing local training courses for vets and farriers, as well as a telephone and email advice service.
It used to be thought that the donkey could be treated as a small horse but we now know there are many ways donkeys differ from horses and their veterinary care should reflect this.
What we provide
Full haematology, biochemistry and parasitology samples can be analysed at the Sanctuary's laboratory. The Sanctuary offers a local referral service at its fully equipped hospital in Sidmouth, Devon.
Facilities include an operating theatre and diagnostic equipment including endoscopy, x-ray and ultrasound.
We have two full-time equine dental technicians (BAEDT qualified) working with us to provide routine dental care. They are always happy to provide advice to other BAEDT qualified equine dental technicians.
