Father's Day is celebrated on different dates around the world, but here in the UK it falls on Sunday 19 June 2014 and fatherhood comes in all shapes and sizes... even the long-eared braying kind.
Here at the Sanctuary we offer homes to thousands of donkeys and mules and amongst them are a pair of dads who will be receiving an armful of extra hugs on Sunday from our grooms at Woods Farm.
Gregory (aged 9) came into our care with his son Boris (aged 5) and daughter Betty (aged 4) in 2013. Although Boris isn't in this photo, they all lived together and were never very far away from each other. Boris was lucky enough to be rehomed in 2014 while Gregory and Betty remain together and the rest of their donkey friends.
Tony (aged 20) came into our care with his son Ernest (aged 14) because their owner didn't have sufficient grazing for them both. They are very sweet natured and love cuddles. Tony likes to rest his head on your shoulder and fall asleep! Despite Tony and Ernest being at the Sanctuary, their owner regularly visits and loves them to bits.
Woods Farm is an exceptional farm... not only is it home to Gregory and Tony and their offspring but also to another donkey father and son duo Bonzo (aged 9) and Freddy (aged 4) who have been with us since mid-2013. Both were very timid when they came into our care but our grooms have been working to make them feel comfortable and safe.
So on Father's Day, spare a loving thought for Gregory, Tony and Bonzo.
If you have the space, have you considered rehoming donkeys just like Boris? Fostering donkeys is one of the most amazing things you can do to help us both financially and in terms of freeing up our staff to provide more specialist care to donkeys that need it most.
Adopt a donkey
If you don't have sufficient space, you can still help by adopting one of our adorable donkeys where they stay in our care and you can come and visit as often as you like.
No breeding policy
The Donkey Sanctuary has a no breeding policy and only have foals if a donkey is taken in already pregnant.
