Town Barton farm is spread over 140 acres and is situated in the picturesque village of Tedburn St Mary, which lies on the edge of Dartmoor National Park making it a very beautiful setting. The farm is managed by Paul Carter and specialises in mules and hinnies, although the farm does have a small herd of donkeys.
Staff here are required to have good knowledge of equine behaviour as many of the mules that come to Town Barton have behavioural problems and are very difficult to handle, therefore there are mule trainers here that specialise in behavioural work. We also have extra facilities to help deal with the growing number of mules, including a sand school, a round pen and a stocks area.
The farm produces approximately 600 bales of its own haylage every year, as well as producing compost from the manure which is then spread back over the land. We also have a willow plantation to help with the dirty water system. We are also lucky enough to have a small wooded area on the edge of the farm which encourages lots of wildlife to visit here, including badgers, foxes, deer, buzzards and brown hares.
