New year new school term!
Meet the first graduates of The Donkey Sanctuary’s new ‘donkey training school’.
Cloudy, DJ and Biscuit graduated from training at our Sidmouth HQ last month and have started out at our Leeds centre as therapy donkeys.
DJ and Biscuit will become riding donkeys for children with additional needs whilst Cloudy is being trained as an outreach donkey to go into care homes and to visit schools.
Cathryn Dixon, of The Donkey Sanctuary Leeds, said: “We’re delighted to have Cloudy, DJ and Biscuit. They’re coming along really well and everyone loves having them around. We’re really excited to see how they get on in future.”
Biscuit was the star pupil, flying through the training, but every therapy donkey is specially selected for their sociability and friendliness.
Lauriel Woodley head of the donkey training school at Sidmouth, said: “We’re thrilled that Biscuit, Cloudy and DJ picked up their training so well and have proved such a hit at our Leeds centre. We also have Horatio and Flapjack ready to ‘graduate’ soon and to go out as therapy donkeys at our Ivybridge centre.”
The charity aims to launch twelve new mobile therapy units across the UK and Ireland and a further ten projects internationally by 2018.
Training involves introducing the donkeys to unfamiliar sights and sounds, to human contact, to the riding arena, to narrow corridors and to travelling in the trailer.
