Toby loves his work helping children and adults with additional needs, and when he’s not in the centre of the action, he’s usually planning daring escapades with his best friend, Tufty. This usually consists of devising sneaky ways to carry out raids on the feed store cupboard, ideally without the grooms’ knowledge!
Toby’s interest in food stops at nothing. He appears to have a radar which helps him locate food even at a significant distance, be it in the tack room, store cupboard, staff room or the treat bucket, where kind visitors often leave gifts. The grooms try their utmost to scupper Toby’s antics, since too many treats can be detrimental to the health of a donkey.
Both Toby and Tufty were originally from a children’s petting farm based in a theme park in the north of England. However, due to the foot and mouth outbreak in 2002, the farm had to close and this delightful pair arrived at The Donkey Sanctuary. They are never far apart and can be found running around the paddocks or trying to mastermind their next adventures.
Toby loves to give his grooms the run around, but the moment he is with children he changes completely. His amazing donkey intuition means he knows exactly what they need, which makes him a fantastic member of the donkey assisted therapy team. He is calm, patient, loving and kind, and will do whatever he can to help his little riders feel safe and secure.
With his pale grey colouring, stripy ears, the deep brown cross on his back and the kinky curl at the end of his tail, Toby is extremely striking and always stands out in a crowd.
He is also our play-leader and spends much of his time encouraging his donkey friends to join in on one of his many games. Although if we had to name his favourite game, we’re certain it would be tug of war with wellies!
Do you think Toby could be the donkey for you? If you’ve already adopted Toby why not share this with your friends and family to show them just how lucky you are?
