Benjy is the most vocal of our donkeys and is perhaps best described as a funny little fellow with an unusual bray. He either hoots or huffs and puffs. It’s almost as if he’s trying to talk to you; full marks if you can decipher what he’s saying. Above all he loves a bit of company, someone to chat to and chew the fat with, so much so that if he’s in the petting pen near the arena at his home in Belfast he’ll stop passers-by for a chat, all the while huffing and puffing his little greeting.
Despite his sociable nature, Benjy hasn’t really bonded to a particular donkey in the herd, but he does have a rather adoring fan in Alfie, who is terribly fond of him and will be in his shadow every time the two donkeys are together. Benjy is also no stranger to leading members of the group by their lead ropes, and with his fluffy white legs and dappled face, he always commands a lot of attention wherever he goes.
Benjy has all the important attributes for providing donkey assisted therapy thanks to his placid and gentle nature. He is truly unflappable, a great quality to have especially if one of his children has behavioural difficulties or becomes a little excited. Benjy is always there for them and will remain quiet and constant regardless of the situation.
Sometimes he can stand so still that he gets mistaken for a statue, but it’s this quality that also makes him great at welcoming new donkeys to the Sanctuary. He takes them under his wing, showing them the ropes and helping them to settle in. Perhaps this is the reason our grooms nickname him ‘little star.’
If you’ve already adopted Benjy, why not share this with your friends and family to show them just how lucky you are?
