Those of you familiar with New Barn here at The Sanctuary will notice a friendly face missing from our group of donkey residents. Sadly 23 year old Andalusian donkey, Nelly, had to be put to sleep on Wednesday to relieve her from the suffering she was experiencing in her old age. Nelly came into our care in January 1997 and soon became a firm favorite among staff and visitors. She spent 12 happy years living here in New Barn with her donkey friends. Nelly became best friends with Teddy in 2009 and they were seldom seen apart.

My name is Stephanie Westlake and I’ve been a groom at the Sanctuary for 3 years. My job is to train donkeys so they can go out to a new home and lead happy lives with their new caring owners. All of the donkeys are still owned by the Sanctuary, but it means they can have more one to one care from lovely new families!
