The time has finally arrived and the Veterinary Department are in the middle of moving from our old hospital buildings to the brand new, purpose built hospital at Brookfield Farm. This follows a lot of hard work by many people and many departments to coordinate movement of all the equipment, drugs, people and paperwork accumulated over the years! The move is taking place in stages to ensure there is no interruption in our level of care for the donkeys and during the two weeks both theatres are out of action we have an agreement with a local equine veterinary practice, St David’s, that we can use their facilities if necessary so we can continue to provide the highest standard of care.
As you read this we will have transferred all the equipment across from the old hospital to the new and as you can see from the photos the nurses have been busy unpacking and organising all the storage of drugs and equipment. Everyone is busy packing up their desks into brightly coloured boxes and half of the admin team have moved across to set up and make sure all technology works so by the time the rest of us get there we will have made a smooth transfer with hopefully no drop in service to the many external vet practices that contact us daily for help and advice.
While we are sad to leave the old hospital situated in the beautiful surroundings of the Sanctuary’s headquarters we are looking forward to the increased space we will gain at the new hospital. With more stables for donkeys, more examination spaces and a theatre with an extra recovery box we will be able to be more efficient in treating the donkeys that need to come into the hospital. There was also great excitement when the CCTV cameras were turned on as this will enable us to observe donkeys within their stables or recovering from anaesthetic remotely and so pick up abnormal behaviours the donkeys may show when they are not being directly observed.
By the end of next week the move should be complete, with everything transferred across and all systems up and running. Watch this space for more information on how we are settling in and getting on with all the lovely new facilities.
Thanks also to all of those who have donated to The Donkey Sanctuary and enabled us to build this fantastic new space so we can continue to provide top of the line care for Donkeys and Mules.
