As many of our wonderful supporters know the Veterinary Department is moving to a new purpose-built hospital in the future, and this is an expensive project. Lots of you have been incredibly generous and supported the new hospital with donations and cards.
Georgie is a donkey that has figured prominently in some of our appeal literature, so I thought you might like an update about his progress. It has been so touching to read the messages of support and love for him from a multitude of well- wishers worldwide.
Georgie came to the hospital as an emergency with a blocked bladder, he could not urinate and was in great discomfort. After surgery and a stay in hospital he was considered well enough to go to Woods Farm. The farm is only 10 minutes by car away from the hospital and as I currently look after the donkeys at Woods Farm it meant that after surgery, I could keep a really close eye on him.
To start with things were difficult for Georgie, he had rather lost his trust in people as everyone who came near him seemed to be armed with a syringe and needle, thermometer, or oral medicines. In addition we had to clean his back legs daily as they were getting scalded by urine that Georgie was still having some problems with passing. Fortunately he had his best friend Gabriel with him the whole time, and the two boys were put in with a quiet older group of donkeys to recuperate.
As you can see from the adorable photo the grooms at Woods Farm have done an amazing job in getting Georgie to trust and love people again. The photo shows him and Gabriel with Laura and Sarah, and a whole group of donkey friends at a routine check- up last week (Georgie is the donkey on the right). Both donkeys now know that people can be good to be around, and have become friendly and even boisterous again - meaning they now live with a younger group of boys. Georgie is making a good recovery clinically, he now urinates well and the problem has not returned. He has become one of the farm favourites and it is lovely to see him on my weekly visits.
So once again thank you to all of Georgie’s fans and Happy New Year to you all.
