My name is Nicki Hart and I’ve been a groom at Woods Farm for 15 years. I’m privileged to look after Cuckoo Barn which houses the elderly and special care donkeys. They are such a group of characters and each donkey is gorgeous in their own special way, but everyone has their favourites. Take Bonnie for instance...
A few years ago Bonnie lost her brother Thistle. She was devoted to him and I was very worried about how she was going to cope without him as she was such a quiet shy donkey that lived in her brother's shadow.
I kept a very close eye on her and gave her lots of TLC and during this time we started to bond hugely. She started to follow me around quietly with the odd nudge for attention. This grew to Bonnie cheekily lifting her head onto my shoulder, followed by rearranging my hair to a different style. She was quite the hair dresser... even pulling my pony tail out some days, but always gently.
When the weather got cold Bonnie would remove my hat... I would put it back on... Bonnie would take it off! A game which continued all winter! Every single morning without fail I would be greeted with a very, very loud bellowing bray.
Today I walked into Cuckoo Barn and it felt rather empty.
No bellowing HELLOOO! No nudge in the back and no new hairdo. The day before I said goodbye to Bonnie after a short illness.
I shall miss my funny, noisy, quirky little hairdresser very much... sleep well old girl xx
