When Liz Wright, fellow Donkey Welfare Adviser, and I visited The Donkey Sanctuary's Romanian holding base in Cernavoda 3 years ago and were told they desperately needed a tractor, we decided to fundraise in order to help this dream come true. Water and feed were being physically handled in bitterly cold temperatures by both vets and staff to the 65 donkeys during the winters, where temperatures can drop to -20 degrees.
With the input of funds from our Suffolk Donkey Days and an amazing £1,165 raised last year at the iconic Marjorie Newman’s Fundraising Day in August as part of her 90th birthday celebrations, over €3,500 was raised. Not enough, though, to purchase a second-hand tractor. So when Sara Turetta, who runs Save the Dogs and our holding base, informed me that additional money was to be forthcoming from a European surplus in Donkey Sanctuary funds, we were delighted.
The tractor has now arrived and in honour of an amazing Suffolk lady, it is to be officially named ‘Marjorie’. Marjorie herself is ‘tickled pink’ to have a tractor named after her! A truly red letter day for Sara and her team as the new tractor will make life so much easier for everybody and mean they have more time for the donkeys themselves.
Marjorie is planning another Donkey Day at her home in Lavenham, Suffolk on 20 August 2016 so make a note in your diaries and come along and meet the original Marjorie!
