Greetings from Hawassa and The Donkey Sanctuary Ethiopia team!
This week the 7th Farmers and Semi-pastoralists Festival is celebrated in Hawassa. The festival is aimed at creating a strong working spirit in the Ethiopian farming community. Many farmers were selected for their outstanding achievements with 920 receiving awards for their work. It was encouraging to see that around 20-30% of these were women.
One of the festival’s events is an agricultural fair showcasing the work of different organisations. This was our opportunity to demonstrate The Donkey Sanctuary Ethiopia’s work.
We displayed banners to highlight the roles of donkeys in livelihoods, the problems donkeys face, our intervention strategies and, of course, our achievements. Our exhibit proved to be very popular with festival participants.
We were also fortunate enough to get the opportunity to show our work to officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, a great way to raise awareness of the plight of donkeys and what we do to improve their welfare in the long term.
