Many members of staff at The Donkey Sanctuary work very hard to make life better for donkeys but don’t get the recognition they deserve because theirs is a ‘behind the scenes’ job! So, we’d like to let you know that we have some pretty brilliant lab technicians and a dedicated veterinary pathologist.
The team is based at our lab on one of our farms and not a day goes by without a post bag stuffed full of rather unorthodox goodies being delivered for our techies to work their magic on. And what are these goodies? Blood and dung of course! Can you believe they analysed no less than 3,122 blood samples and almost 15,500 dung samples in 2015? Each sample is treated individually and results relayed back to the relevant veterinary practice which could be anywhere from Cornwall to Caithness!
As a result of years of data we have been able to develop a reference range for blood samples so we know what is normal and what is not. You’ll not be surprised to know that yet another item on the Donkeys are Different list is their blood so it’s really important that we are able to advise vets nationally and globally what the normal range is for donkeys as it’s different from horses.
We vets are so lucky to have a lab on our doorstep as we frequently take blood samples to help us in our diagnosis. And blood samples from poorly donkeys are treated with utmost priority with a technician often calling us to inform us of the results if major abnormalities are spotted so we can start a treatment plan straight away. They offer the same first class service to vets in practice and have been able to help many poorly donkeys around the country by their speedy service.
So this is a big thank you to a great team working behind the scenes to help make donkeys’ lives better. Up to their necks in blood and poo all for the love of donkeys!
