At last the sun has been shining and how lovely to discard the wellies and waterproofs for a few weeks. The sun is great for us all but it comes with risks not just for us humans but for the donkeys and other animals too.
I have one white donkey who has a pink muzzle which will burn if left unprotected. Every morning I check on my herd of 5 donkeys armed with their fly masks, fly repellent and factor 50 sun block! Eve stands quietly while I smother her nose with sun block and loves her fly mask, but her friends have other ideas and nothing gives them more enjoyment than to try and un-velcro each other’s’ chin straps and play with their masks. However, Eve is left alone thanks to her sun block. None of the others like the smell of it!
My oldest donkey Columbo is mercilessly attacked by the flies and as donkeys get older they require more protection. They are not as agile as the younger ones who will stamp their feet and can reach those awkward places where the flies land. Columbo wears the latest design of a fly rug and with his mask is completely protected allowing him to enjoy his time out grazing.
The donkeys spend hours in their field shelter when the sun is at its strongest and have requested air conditioning but I am clearly not as devoted as one of my wonderful guardian homes. As you can see from the photo Amy and Daisy have their own personal fan, lucky girls!
Enjoy the summer but please remember your donkeys too, plenty of shade, plenty of fresh water and look out for fly bites especially check the boys’ sheaths.
