I found myself trying to catch a pair of stray donkeys in Ballinasloe in the rain at New Year. The problem is that the pounds have closed in my area - the Councils aren't funding them and the last one in Ballinasloe has closed as the pound keeper just broke his arm. So the Garda (the Irish police) have a lot of trouble dealing with animals on the street and they have to rely on local charities and ourselves.
One of the donkeys was unusually difficult with a propensity to kick with the back feet, and in front it ducked its head down and barged past at high speed.
Knowing this I arranged temporary accommodation and returned with a horsebox. With the help of a neighbour I managed to load them and brought them to their lodgings despite the donkeys’ best efforts to inflict some hoof marks on my person.
Having unloaded them my companion and I congratulated each other on a job safely done with what has to be the worst donkey I have ever experienced. With that a lady arrived delighted to find her donkeys, calling out "Cuddles" who trotted over like a perfect pet!
Time to go home for New Year I think...
