Last week, I joined fellow Donkey Welfare Advisers Justine Thomas and Sophie Carter at our Training Centre in Sidmouth to take part in a two-day ‘Train the Trainer’ course.
Education is a vital part of our work to promote better welfare for donkeys and mules throughout the world. Our team of Donkey Welfare Advisers are involved in delivering donkey care courses at various venues across England, Scotland and Wales so it is important that we, as trainers, look to develop our own skills and knowledge – after all in this job you never stop learning!
During the course we were asked to catch a ball and answer the question written on it. When it fell to me, I looked down and read my question: ‘why are you here?’ I always struggle with these ice-breaker activities and did my usual thing of panicking and wishing I had an easier question before rushing through an answer in the hope we would move on to the next person quickly.
Having completed the course and having had some time to reflect, I can now answer my ice-breaker question as to why I was there in a bit more detail – ‘I hope we as team are able to deliver courses where those attending have a fun, informative day, learning about donkeys and their welfare, in an engaging and accessible way’ - so if you want to put us to the test and learn more about caring for donkeys have a look at the training courses available on our website.
Meanwhile, here is Justine Thomas taking a well-earned break from learning with one of our resident donkeys.
