Our foster scheme finds loving homes for donkeys in our care who would benefit from the kind of one-to-one attention private homes can provide. After completing the application process, we carefully match new foster owners with just the right donkeys – something which is very important towards ensuring a happy future for both donkeys and foster owners.
One of the most exciting times in my job, is being present when donkeys arrive at their new home, and are welcomed by their new family. I feel privileged to share this special moment with these people, who receive the donkeys which have been specially chosen for them.
Recently, I was able to watch the moment when donkeys Brian and Karly were delivered to their new home in Gloucestershire. Even though the weather was horrible, it did not dampen the joy their new owners felt on their arrival. They had been introduced to Brian and Karly once already at The Donkey Sanctuary, and totally fell in love the instant they met!
The donkeys seemed very impressed with their new accommodation and quickly made themselves at home. I was delighted to see them as I had originally brought them into the Sanctuary with their four brothers and their father, Snowy (who has also recently joined a new foster home). I am looking forward to having a long association with them and their lovely new owners.
I also popped in to visit foster owners near Cardiff recently, who had not long ago welcomed three donkeys into their home – Jemima, Winston and Picasso. Elise Mitchell and her family had waited several months for these three, as although they had been selected for the family some time ago, Picasso was quite nervous and needed more handling and training from our staff before they could go.
Elise says they were certainly worth the wait. They are all friendly, gentle donkeys who love their new home – especially browsing the donkey-delicious brambles in their paddocks! They are sharing their new home with ducks, chickens and three children, so a happy and busy little community for all two and four-legged.
Anyone interested in the fostering scheme can find out and apply on the website or ring the welfare team. It is very rewarding, donkeys are great characters and you are supported by your welfare adviser all the way.
