The Donkey Sanctuary volunteers are our true champions giving the precious gift of their time. They come to help in all different ways and each contribution is hugely valued. I recently heard from a wonderful volunteer, Eileen who dedicates her time helping out on one of our farms in Devon, and at a Guardian home in Herefordshire. Here is what she had to catch me up on!
This year the donkey that has stood out to me in the last few months is called Peggy, a two-year-old mare. She is a companion donkey having been relinquished at one-year-old and now has a wonderful home living with several other donkeys in the countryside. She has bonded with donkeys Alfie and Bluey and it is a joy to see how happy they all are together and are constantly playing.
As we know, donkeys love to be busy and are very inquisitive. Peggy is a very friendly donkey who adores people and cuddles. She attended Colmington Fete near Ludlow in the summer and made quite an impression, particularly on one Fireman who was in attendance and who just couldn’t keep away from her.
Peggy also went to Herefordshire Country Fair this year, where again she and her friends attracted many people. The whole day people were talking ‘donkey’ and we had a Donkey Sanctuary stand which was very popular.
Apart from the above, all of Peggy’s donkey friends enjoy daily edible walks around a wood, in turn, which they seem to enjoy. All donkey owners, if possible should be encouraged to make time for their donkeys, and hopefully give them a more interesting life. Enrichment is key!
