Earlier this year I wrote ‘A Story of Collaboration’, giving Donkey Sanctuary supporters an insight into two of my amazing Guardian Homes and the special kind of enrichment they do to keep their mules and donkeys happy, healthy and stimulated. After my recent visit I got an email from Lesley with a very proud update about one of her amazing mules, Milo.
Milo and the two other mules who live with Lesley are all agility stars in their own right, but Milo is special. He is the top rated mule competing in agility in the world, and on this occasion, during a Halloween themed competition, he was the only competitor who would apple bob, cleverly mouthing the apple out of the water and gaining full marks!
Donkey and mule agility is great fun and a marvellous way to keep these animals fit in body and mind. It is like dog agility, where the horses, donkeys and mules have to negotiate obstacles such as weave poles, go through tunnels, over seesaws and bridges, and skilled time sections, backing through a pattern of poles without touching them, and controlled paces sections, performing a walk and trot at set speeds.
Agility is a great way to give your animals a little extra excitement in their lives! If you don't have transport to take your donkey or mule to a competition, you can film your round through a home built course and have it judged on line, and there is a specialised website for more information and help in getting started.
Milo and all his friends say "get going and have as much fun as we do!"
