Many of you will remember Lucy, the little donkey with the lion heart, who came to us last year in very poor condition. We worked around the clock with the vets, farriers and dentists to give Lucy the best possible chance of recovery.
When I wrote to introduce you all to Lucy and tell you of her story, we had hoped that she would continue to respond to all the love, care, well wishes and professional treatment she was receiving from our supporters and the team around her. Sadly, our vets found that Lucy’s organs were failing to work as they should and this began to take its toll on our very spirited little donkey. Welcoming donkeys and mules into our care is a wonderful privilege but one that comes with the responsibility to ensure that we make the right decisions which are solely in their best interests. Often the right decision for them is often the hardest to make for us.
Lucy had already been through so much in her short life, her courageous nature inspired everyone who was lucky enough to meet her, so it was with a heart full of sorrow that we wished Lucy a very fond farewell as vets made the decision to set her free from any suffering and allow her to pass away, peacefully to sleep.
When facing these difficult moments, it always helps us to know that our supporters are there, often with kind words and encouragement for the work we do and after a challenging day it is comforting to read such positive and lovely comments from supporters to pick you up and give you the motivation to face another day.
Knowing Lucy was loved by so many during her time with us makes coming to terms with the loss of such a truly inspiring and loving donkey so much easier to bear. Thank you all for your continued support, through the hard times as well as the good.
Run free Lion Heart Lucy, you will be missed xxx
