Cobi and Mark Snelson have been Donkey Guardians to two gorgeous donkeys called Precious (aged 19) and Cudos (aged 15) since 2014. I truly believe these two girls have enriched their lives, and all in a small village in Somerset.
It is not unusual to see the two donkeys at the local pub, or parading down the aisle of the local church for Palm Sunday. Precious and Cudos very much enjoy the change of scenery from their paddock when they are taken out for walks with Cobi and Mark round the quiet lanes of Somerset. They enjoy nothing more than to meet people and have a nibble of the hedgerows as they potter along.
When they're out on their adventures, it's fun to see how Precious likes to take the lead and sets a brisk and confident walking pace even though she's the smaller of the two, whilst Cudos follows behind with a steadier and more cautious stride. This is particularly interesting as at home in the paddock, Cudos is the bossier of the two!
Cobi and Mark took part in the nationally organised village litter pick ‘Clean for the Queen’ in spring 2016. They were quite shocked by the amount of litter to be found and this got them thinking; why not combine their donkey walks with cleaning up the country lanes and hedgerows a little bit as well?
They bought some second hand ‘panniers’ which fitted Cudos perfectly and were just the job for the task! They feel that their donkeys enjoy having a job to do – so they are more than up to the task and especially enjoy the amount of praise once that task is completed.
These two special girls have led Palm Sunday Parades, starred in local photo shoots and village events such as the Summer Fete, and now they have truly got into the community spirit by helping to keep their village beautiful. Local children love to visit the donkeys and often accompany them on their walks. Some of the children now adopt donkeys from the Sanctuary, and have even visited Slade Farm in Sidmouth, inspired by their love of Precious and Cudos.
