As a relief groom for The Donkey Sanctuary I get the fantastic chance to work on not one but all of the farms in the Devon area. This means that I work alongside lots of different people - and hundreds of donkeys and mules!
It can get a little confusing some days, especially if you are trying to find one donkey in particular in amongst a large herd. Most donkeys I know will come and say hello straight away, but there are a few who like to keep to themselves. And some others just can’t stay away!
Recently I’ve had the pleasure of joining the team at Woods Farm where I met the lovely Darcy. She instantly came to check out the interesting new person who had entered her barn. And she’s quite a big donkey- so I couldn’t miss her! What I didn’t know is that Darcy loves attention and was very pleased when I provided her with a big hug.
Over the next few weeks I would get to know her better. And every day she would come up and ask for lots of love and cuddles, which I was more than happy to provide. Some days she’ll even sneak up behind me and put her head on my shoulder.
I’m so lucky to work with donkeys like Darcy. Thinking about her reminds me why I love my job so much and she always puts a smile on my face.
