With the support of The Donkey Sanctuary, animal-welfare organisation Animal Nepal works in over 15 brick factories and holds regular health camps to help sick and injured donkeys and mules that work in the kilns.
To encourage good welfare of these hard-working animals, in 2014 Animal Nepal celebrated World Veterinary Day with a ‘Best Equine Handler’ award. Using a rating system based on a list of ‘Good Practices’, which included proper feeding and watering, sheltering, loading, as well as immediate treatment and absence of beatings, Rahul Hindu was announced winner for the model care he takes of the animals he looks after.
Local vet Dr Sudeep Koirala said: “If everyone would take as good care of their equines as Rahul, no donkey or mule working in the brick kilns would suffer from hunger, beatings or wounds.”
