Have you ever walked into a shop and looked at a pair of shoes and thought “I like those” and you then look at the price tag and think “no that’s too much”?
I do, quite regularly and my husband will always say “oh just buy them if you want them” but still you walk out of the shop empty handed.
You may be thinking what my point is. Well, look down at the pair of wellies or yard boots you are a wearing and tell me how much they cost... thought as much.
See when it comes to our donkeys we don’t hesitate to find them the best food, care and rugs possible. We quite happily spend endless amounts of money on our own yard boots or wellies with the excuse “I will wear them all winter.”
When the rain takes you by surprise and you run outside forgetting your coat - because your first thought is you need to keep your donkeys dry - even though you end up soaked through, you feel accomplished seeing them tucked up inside their stables.
Nine times out of ten they are quite happy outside but as protective donkey owners we like to think we know best and it’s not until you have soaking wet feet that you also realise you also forgot to put on your amazing new boots.
So... is it crazy or is it love?
I call it love, what is crazy about having the satisfaction knowing you are giving the best care you can to these amazing creatures. With Christmas only around the corner you know that you will be easy to buy gifts for as thick socks, woolly hats, scarf and gloves are always welcomed.
Especially on a cold winter’s day when your fingers are so cold you could cry and you end up tucking your fingers under your armpits to keep warm, but you still have to finish their stables so you spend the next ten minutes shaking your fingers hoping to get the blood supply working whilst little their faces watch you from the gate, eager to get to bed.
I smile as I write this blog as I know every person who works with our four legged friends will be able to relate to some, if not all of this blog. But don’t worry Christmas is almost here so if you are also like me you will be thinking, we are half way through the winter once Christmas is out the way and it will be spring before you know it.
I can also understand how people who do not work with donkeys may think that this is crazy, most of my friends do, but its ok I don’t expect them to understand. But I do know there are so many of you who do understand and will brave all weathers for our donkeys and I’m right there with you so keep warm and keep smiling!
