Bidding on eBay for a pair of boots I got more than I bargained for recently.
The lady selling the boots phoned up to say that I had ‘won’ the boots but that she couldn’t accept the price.
I thought, here we go..
But to my surprise she explained that bidding had gone crazy and that she couldn’t accept so much money (£102) for second hand boots. She said that £75 was enough and that she’d refund the rest.
I said I was happy with my bid! But thinking about it I explained I worked for The Donkey Sanctuary and would donate the rest of the money to the charity.
It turned out that the vendor’s daughter had been a donkey-lover and that they had visited the Sanctuary together. Sadly she has since lost her daughter.
With this in mind I decided to use the money to ‘adopt’ Teddy for her. I thought she’d enjoy the interaction over the year and that her daughter probably once had a teddy.
We’ve corresponded since and the vendor has actually set up a direct debit to The Donkey Sanctuary. I’m touched by how such a chance meeting had such a positive ending. Now I have lovely boots and lovely thoughts of donkeys every time I put them on!
