It sounds like the start of a corny Christmas cracker joke: what do you call a cross between a donkey and a zebra?
In the hot and crowded city of Dar es Salaam, I met Elize Dorrestein, a graduate vet from The Netherlands who is volunteering with the Tanzanian Animal Welfare Society (TAWESO). She recently spotted this donkey-zebra cross near Lake Naivasha in Kenya. She told me: “We were on the way to the lake and at first we were excited to see some giraffe and zebras. But in between those zebras, there was a strange sight. I thought, that donkey has striped legs! Living wild, the animal looked happy and healthy. Just part of the herd!”
Whether it's a 'zonkey', a 'donkra' or a 'zedonk', I'll be keeping my eyes peeled, hoping for another rare sighting. Well spotted, Elize!
