This is Jenny, one of our older donkeys out on the rehoming scheme now in her 30's. Jenny's favourite toy is a treat ball that was a Christmas present. She spends lots of time pushing it around the paddock to release the goodies inside. Jenny is a happy much loved donkey and age is clearly not a barrier to a good quality of life in our foster homes!
Jenny sadly lost her companion some years ago. Sometimes when donkeys are older and have a lot of company and attention from people and other animals, they prefer to live alone rather than try to adjust to a new donkey.
This is definitely the case with Jenny, who is partially sighted and knows her way around her stable and paddock very well. She recognises all the people and other animals she lives without any problems.
The Donkey Sanctuary welfare advisers take great care to assess what is the best option for each donkey when they suffer the loss of a companion, and we often send a new friend to join them as soon as possible. However this is not always the best decision, therefore the requirements for each individual donkey are carefully assessed within each situation. And for Jenny it was decided she was happy just as she was.
