Rigby G was relinquished to the Sanctuary in August 2000 because his elderly owner could no longer look after him. Sadly Rigby was put to sleep in January 2008 because he had such a terrible foot problem he could not stand up.
When Rigby arrived at the Sanctuary he had a problem with his nose. He had alopecia which means the hair does not grow and therefore he suffered badly with sunburn in the summer months.
We used to walk around the fair skinned donkeys with bottles of factor 50 sun block every summer until Rigby arrived at the Sanctuary with a brilliant invention from his owner ... a nose flap!
We thought maybe the other donkeys who suffer from sunburn could wear them too. So we asked his owner where she brought it from. She told us we couldn't buy them in the shops as she had made it herself and wouldn't mind making some for the other donkeys who suffered from sunburn.
As time went on, the demand for nose flaps was too much for one elderly lady to keep up with. So we asked her if she didn't mind if we sent one of her nose flaps off to the same company that makes our donkey rugs to see if they could mass produce them for us and they could.
Because of Rigby's clever ex-owner, all the donkeys on the Sanctuary who suffer from sunburn, now wear these nose flaps all summer and no longer suffer from painful sunburn on their noses.
Even though Rigby is no longer with us, every time the staff who knew him see a nose flap on a donkey, he will be remembered!
