Mimosa (or Mo as she is fondly known) has been a huge ambassador for The Donkey Sanctuary in her long time with us. She went to all the shows and events with the show team, putting on displays and promoting the Sanctuary.
Mo has been a film star, carriage driving on Pet Rescue and jumping over jumps to show that donkeys can. (She loved doing this and always did a little buck and a kick with excitement before doing it).
Mimosa and her driving companion Sam were on the news once where they, very proudly, drove the weather man around while he was presenting.
She has also been to London where the show team campaigned up to the stock exchange about fair trade.
Mo is a huge character even now and throughout her life here has had one habit which we have found hard to break… She can open doors, gates and anything else she puts her mind to. She can get into the feed room and helps herself to feed. She even lets herself out again! She can open the gate but doesn’t shut it so all her friends can escape too. This, of course, has led her to being a film star several times over. Clever girl!
Tracey has had the pleasure of looking after Mimosa for over 20 years. She has a huge personality and a lovely disposition. Making her truly loved by all who meet her. Mo is enjoying her retirement in Old Yard. But don’t be fooled, she is still up to her old tricks.
Mimosa came into our care in 1989 because of her owner's ill health. As she was an overweight donkey it was decided to try her on the show team to see if exercise and stimulation would slim her down a little.
Straight away Mimosa showed us that she was going to be a special donkey. We trained her to carriage drive, which she loved. She then went on to ploughing where she and her companion Sam entered the national ploughing competition competing against Shire Horses! She has been to lots of shows, winning many rosettes and trophies as in her day she was absolutely beautiful (she still is).
Mimosa’s only fault was that after we spent hours washing and grooming her just before a show, just as she was about to go in the ring she would roll! Once, she even rolled in front of the judge!
For many of you who have been to Donkey Week before you may have seen Mimosa in the driving displays with Sam as part of the four in hand. We are sure that even though she is 35 and retired, if you showed her the harness she would leap about and get excited like she did all those years ago!
Mimosa and all of our donkeys are really looking forward to seeing you on Saturday.
