There are many occasions when people have to make the very brave and difficult decision to ask for help when they can no longer look after their donkeys anymore. You may think that once someone signs over their donkey to The Donkey Sanctuary, that’s where it ends. Often that is just the very beginning.
This is also the case for owners who have joined our foster scheme and provide a loving home to some of our foster donkeys.
Janet and Mike have both been fantastic supporters for many years, even volunteering at one of our donkey assisted therapy centres. In 2000 they joined our foster scheme and a donkey called Dennis went to join their own two donkeys called Jasmin and Genner. Sadly Genner passed away and both Jasmin and Dennis became close friends.
But a few years ago Janet and Mike had to make what must have been a very emotional decision. Jasmin was suffering with poor health and the decision was made to bring Jasmin into our veterinary hospital for on-going medical treatment. This is an extremely stressful time for donkeys so their best friend is always with them to minimise stress. Despite all our efforts, Jasmin passed away with her best friend Dennis by her side.
Dennis took up residence here at Paccombe Farm in 2011. Over the years Janet and Mike have brought an array of visitors to see Dennis, all of which used to get pleasure in visiting him and his friends in their previous home. Dennis absolutely adores getting visitors and will often tell the other donkeys off as he wants all the attention for himself.
So you can imagine his shock today when our very brave and very nosey farm cat Kipper made an appearance to say hello to Janet. It is an honour to be able to witness the pleasure Dennis still gives Janet and Mike to be able to hear stories of what Dennis and his friends used to get up to.
