Happy New Year to you all, it was such a lovely sunny day I could not resist visiting Billy at Cottage Shelter on my way into work this morning.
We have had some terrible flooding and storms over the Christmas break and I was delighted to see that the new building that now houses the donkey assisted therapy team at Sidmouth was creating a superb facility for these special donkeys.
Billy was with his friends out in the sand exercise area. This sand surface provides somewhere to roll when the fields are too wet and the sand acts as a natural emery board on their hoofs; helping to keep them healthy.
The second photo gives you a glimpse of the stable block, which was manufactured inhouse, and has heat lamps for very cold days. In addition to the donkey area the new feed room and storage space has provided the team with much improved facilities and Louise Blair the Riding Instructor told me "it is fantastic, marvellous, superb and even with all the bad weather we have had the donkeys were safe, warm and dry".
Billy, as I am sure you will agree, looks fantastic; he is thoroughly enjoying his life providing therapy, riding and cart rides for the children with additional needs in East Devon.
