Abbie is one of the events team donkeys. She lives at Shelter 1 and has been part of the events team since 2008.
She was handed over to the Sanctuary by the police in Ireland in 1998 when was only 8 years old and heavily in foal. Not long after arriving in the safety of the Sanctuary, Abbie gave birth to a little filly who was named Michaela.
Both Abbie and Michaela enjoyed life at two different foster homes before returning to the Sanctuary where the decision was made in 2007 to move them to Sidmouth. Michaela found new friends and joined the foster scheme and Abbie joined the events team.
Abbie is now 23 years old and still enjoys working with the school children and on some of the smaller events. She is a very quiet, kind and gentle donkey and she is fantastic with young children.
Unfortunately at the moment Abbie has got a skin problem, so to try and sooth her itching and to cure the problem Hollie (one of the events team grooms) and I gave her a nice warm bath.
We have a horse shower that you plug in to the tap and heats the water before flowing through the shower head. This helps to keep Abbie nice and toasty warm whilst having a bath! She then enjoyed a good massage with shampoo with Hollie on one side and me on the other.
After we rinsed out the shampoo, we then towel dried her before being presented with a special present – a lovely warm woolly knitted blanket! Hollie’s cousin Clare made it for Abbie and sent it down from Kent to keep her warm after her bath.
Clare is very kindly in the process of knitting several more blankets to donate to the Sanctuary – what a star!
After being wrapped up in her new blanket, towels to absorb the water and a padded rug, we gave Abbie a nice warm feed under a heat lamp in her straw bed and left her to dry out.
After a couple of hours Abbie was dry and gleaming! I think she was the smartest donkey on the farm and her skin was soothed and looking a lot better.
So on behalf of Abbie we would like to say a huge thank you to Clare Smith for donating blankets to us.
