Last week we welcomed a new member to our events team, a lovely little donkey by the name of Angel. He’s a pretty 13 year old, skewbald coloured donkey with a perfect 5-point star shape on his flank, which is how he came to be named ‘Angel’.
Angel came into our care in 2005 and his quiet temperament and laid back nature was quickly spotted by our donkey assisted therapy centre here in Sidmouth, so he moved to the centre to start his training. He worked at the centre for several years helping children with additional needs - playing games with them, helping them with their balance, co-ordination and confidence; a function which donkeys are able to provide with amazing results.
However, staff at the centre noticed that Angel wasn’t keeping up with the work load as well as he used to, so they decided that this chapter of his life should come to a close. As always donkeys come first, second and third here at the Sanctuary, so as sad as they were to lose a fantastic team member, it was in Angel’s best interests to slow down a little bit. As he still loves people and attention, it was decided the best place for him to move to would be the events team, so he could continue to work closely with our visitors.
Angel settled in to life at Shelter 1 really quickly and is already an active member of the team. This week he took part in a photo-shoot to help promote our upcoming events and he behaved like, well, a little angel!
He posed with Shirgar (who is 20 years his senior!) like a complete pro. He wasn’t fazed by the props used in the photo-shoot or by my dog Gypsy who was also modelling in the photos. In fact, he and Gypsy made quite good friends. Angel would softly sniff her little head and Gypsy would try to lick his nose in return!
We are all really excited to have Angel join our team, and I am sure any of you who are booked in for events will be equally excited to meet this special little donkey.
