The role of running one of the Sanctuary’s donkey assisted therapy centres is amazing, not one day is ever the same, you never know who is going to walk through the entrance doors. The children literally do come in all shapes and sizes with varying degrees of disabilities and additional needs.
You receive calls from the public about donkeys they are worried about, calls from donkey owners who have an ill donkey or have sadly lost their donkey, wanting advice.
Visitors come along in their droves to find out about the work we do and that of The Donkey Sanctuary.
Nothing, however, prepares you for the time when a child you have watched come to the Centre grow who has grown in confidence and had such an amazing time at the Centre suddenly and unexpectedly dies. Grace was four days from her 8th birthday.
Grace’s funeral last Saturday was amazing and we were very honoured to be asked to attend with Tinker, Grace’s favourite donkey. Grace’s final journey was led by two beautiful black Friesian horses and flanked by Tinker, who is pure white. Tinker was impeccably behaved and stayed the entire time throughout the funeral. After the service he received lots of cuddles as people came to meet Grace’s favourite donkey. The day was truly beautiful and we will stay in close contact with the McGloughlin family and for certain we will never forget Grace’s magical smile.

Grace’s parents kindly gave us permission to publish this on our website. Mr and Mrs McLoughlin went along to the Centre's spring fair with Grace’s brother and sister and also handed a donation collected at Grace’s funeral which came to over £600. They also want to get more actively involved at the Centre as volunteers and they would like to buy outdoor equipment for SEN children to use in memory of their daughter Grace.
