Dodger is a 10 year old donkey who lives at Town Barton. Dodger had no idea what the day was going to bring when we arrived early at work on Sunday morning. We had to try out a younger donkey this year for the Palm Sunday procession, as Philip, the pro, is now retired from his Palm Sunday duties due to his age. We had another donkey lined up but they refused to board the trailer, time was getting on so we used our back up plan, which went by the name of Dodger.
Dodger was standing by the gate watching the other donkey refuse to board. We clocked eyes on him and knew he was the one for the job. It was as if he was standing there by the gate with his head held out trying desperately to be noticed. As soon as his head collar was on he shot out the barn and to our disbelief he took himself onto the ramp and in the trailer... he knew what he had to do!
We dressed him up with a blanket and garland which he seemed to show off proudly!
Dodger was delighted when he led the procession with the congregation of All Saint’s Church in Oakhampton. Every now and again he would raise his handsome head to show off how important he was. Dodger loved the attention he got from the children and was more than happy to pose for the camera when he was asked. He almost seemed quite disappointed when the congregation left him to go in the church for mass... Oh well Dodger there’s always next year!
