Hello my name is Josh. Let me tell you what I get up to and what happens in a day of my life at Brookfield Farm.
I live in a barn with the grannies. Although I'm only 10 years old I'm only a little chap so some of the other boys used to pick on me so the Brookfield grooms moved me in with the grannies - they are much nicer and very gentle donkeys. I haven't got any of my own donkey friends but Cathy, one of our grooms, is my human friend.
I do have my Mum, Bella, on the farm but she has a friend called Lou Lou and all they do is gossip with each other which is no fun for me.
Wait just a moment, I can hear one of the grooms coming to feed us. It's about 8.45 in the morning and Mrs Merrylegs has been fed and some of the grannies who are on medication have had their breakfast too.
Mrs Merrylegs is a pony and her son Merrylegs is a mule. They came into our barn because Mrs Merrylegs is an elderly lady and needs a little extra TLC. I like them because they let me eat next to them which is quite rare for them as they like a bit of space.
Ooh I'm all excited now as my breakfast is on the way. I try to bray but I have never got the hang of it. I seem to squeal. The grooms have to get us all out of the barn so they can put the food in the troughs but as usual two of us - that's me and a donkey called Joseph - are left in the barn. Joseph tells me he's not that keen on humans but tolerates them these days, especially when it's feeding time! Mmm the food is out, yummy! I give my tails a swish to let the grooms know I'm a happy little donkey. Here come the grannies, running back in.
Ahh that's better, a full tummy. I do wish the weather would get better then we could start going out into the field. I'm not really an outdoor donkey. I don't tend to leave the barn very much especially in the winter because it's too cold. Cathy is always telling me to go outside but I'm happy staying in. She usually comes to see me, even if just for a quick cuddle. We have a little chat and I understand most of what she is saying. We sometimes go for walks together which I like very much. Sometimes I'm a little naughty, but Cathy has a way of making me feel happy so I behave when she takes me out.
It was my 10th birthday last year and the grooms arranged a party for me. I also received a birthday card from home and one from Cathy too. The barn looked fabulous with balloons, banners and my cards hanging on the wall. It was great fun! My Mum and Lou Lou were invited but they wanted to stay out In the field, gossiping I expect.
Someone's coming and I can see they are cleaning the water troughs. The grooms are very good and make sure we have fresh water and clean feed troughs all the time. I think I'll go over and help! Hehe, I don't think I was much help, I just nudged them and got in the way.
I think I might have a little doze. It's all gone quiet, I think it must be breakfast time for the grooms. It's quite busy first thing in the morning what with feeding and giving out medication and the tractor moving around scraping the yards and putting out hayledge. We don't get hayledge as the grannies haven't many teeth so we have chaff which is easier to eat, and is very tasty.
That was a nice little doze. I've been woken by the sounds of gates. Oh lovely it's our turn to be groomed today. I like it when they come in and groom us. Of course I go over to help, well I think I'm helping but all I seem to hear is “No Josh” or “Leave that alone Josh”. I have no idea what they are on about. I was just going to say Cathy normally grooms me. She has me on the head collar without me knowing. I used to be a bit naughty when I was groomed and have my feet picked out but I like Cathy doing me as she doesn't rush me and I behave for her.
What a lovely morning we've had, lots of chatting and laughter. I like making people laugh, I seem to be good at it.
I think the grooms are off for their lunch now. Our mornings vary most days. Sometimes we all have to go to be weighed or the farrier comes to trim our feet, which I'm very good at these days. Sometimes we also have to stand out in the yard so the grooms can collect our dung for sampling and testing in case we need any worming treatment - I don't like that!
Mrs Merrylegs is being fed again which means it will be our feed time again. I like my food. I have to be careful not to put too much weight on because the grannies get more food than the younger donkeys, so I don't want to be moved out if I'm gaining too much weight. I don't think Cathy will let me be moved.
It's dinner time, yum yum! Joseph and I are ready to eat and waiting on our own again.
There's so much more I could say but I think Cathy's hand is aching from writing down my story.
Thank you for reading my day. Bye bye.
