As we approached the month of September, I began to wonder if we had any donkeys by that name on any of our farms and my search came up with three donkeys - one at Brookfield Farm, Paccombe Farm and Town Barton Farm.
One in particular caught my eye because not only was he born here at the Sanctuary but is today celebrating his 21st birthday and the grooms at Town Barton Farm will be making him a special carrot cake - join me in wishing him a happy birthday!
In May 1990, a beautiful grey donkey by the name of Madonna came through our gates who gave birth on 30th September 1990 to a little foal we named September.
Madonna is now a grand old lady at the age of 35 and both mother and son have remained very close over the years and spend a lot of time together.
While September goes off to play with the younger donkeys, Madonna is content to enjoy her extra breakfast and tea-time feeds.
Secretly, she may also like the "quiet time" during the day without her son getting under her feet.
However, there might not be any quiet time to be had today though with September celebrating his birthday.
Can you just imagine all the donkeys braying their heads off to wish him a happy birthday... oh and the grooms giving him lots of extra cuddles for the birthday boy too!
Out of interest, more and more these days I'm finding myself being aware of the number donkeys and mules coming into the Sanctuary. This year alone shows:
|33 - January
47 - February
72 - March
|34 - April
79 - May
26 - June
|54 - July
30 - August
42 - September
Madonna's own records show her as being the 4,410th donkey coming into our care.
The latest donkey coming through the gates is an 11 year old donkey called Joyce whose collar number is 11,431. Doing a quick calculation 7,021 donkeys have arrived at the Sanctuary since May 1990!
No breeding policy
The Donkey Sanctuary does have a no breeding policy but if a donkey comes into our care that is already pregnant, then the foal is also given sanctuary for life.
