This time last year we asked for your help for our elderly donkeys who were being 'bothered' by constant flies buzzing around them as well as some of the very old and frail donkeys suffering from the flies biting their legs.
Earlier today I was over at Paccombe Farm to take some photos and it was lovely to see the 'oldies' happily grazing in their fields wearing their brightly coloured fly fringes and leggings that have proved so helpful in combating the problems.
Pictured here are Jenny (left) and Suzie (right) wearing their fly fringes and super leggings!
The anti-fly leggings enable the donkeys' legs to heal from fly bites and the fine mesh material prevents further attacks. The leggings are made out of a stiffened mesh stitched into a tube that is fine enough to stop the flies getting through and flexible enough so that the donkeys can move around, lie down and get up without restriction. They are fastened with Velcro and have a fleecy edge to the mesh to stop the donkeys being rubbed sore.
I stood and watched Jenny and Suzie for a while before Suzie eventually broke rank from grazing to come over to see what I was doing.
Suzie is now 30 years of age and has been in our care since 2006 but Jenny herself is a grand old lady at the age of 39. Her yellow collar not only shows her name, but a unique number which each donkey is given to help us identify them. I could instantly tell that Jenny has been here a number of years now and on looking up her records can tell you that she came into our care in 1993.
Since Jenny's arrival a staggering 5,733 donkeys and mules have come into the Sanctuary from the time she joined us 18 years ago - all given sanctuary for life.
