It’s been a very busy week at The Donkey Sanctuary, and Phil and I have met many interesting people and have enjoyed introducing them to our friends – the donkeys, at every given opportunity! In fact we were so busy today that Phil and I received some extra help with the grooming at Shelter 2. Well I use the term, “help with grooming”, rather loosely - as the help came in the form of Ashley!
Ashley was an angel whilst I groomed him – he stood in a blissful trance enjoying every brush stroke! Meanwhile Phil was grooming Mars, closely supervised by the other four donkeys – but all were behaving well.
The trouble started once I’d finished Ashley and started to groom Ravelin, and Phil was grooming Zena. Ashley, aided and abetted by Mr Khan, decided to un-do Zena’s headcollar and release her whilst Phil was grooming her. It’s amazing how dexterous little donkeys’ teeth can be when it comes to un-doing quick release knots – and Zena took full advantage of course and led Phil a merry dance for the next few minutes before being led back to the fence where she stood reasonably quietly whilst her grooming session was completed.
Meanwhile, Ashley had not only spotted the grooming box but had managed to drag it under the fence. Now grooming kits make interesting, if generally forbidden, toys for donkeys, so unsurprisingly the entire contents were swiftly distributed amongst the little donkeys – leading to another lively few minutes whilst I retrieved everything – well almost everything!
Turning back to make a start on grooming Mr Khan – I noticed Ashley had got there before me. Body brush in mouth he was dragging the brush over Mr Khan’s neck and head. Mr Khan stood perfectly still whilst Ashley repeated this a few more times. In fact he did this long enough for me to find the camera and take several photos of him “grooming” Mr Khan! As I approached, Ashley dropped the brush and looked at me as if to say, “Well – what do you think? Clever aren’t I?”
Oh yes, a very clever little donkey is our Ashley!
