Although I left Brookfield Farm, one of the Sanctuary's outlying farms, a couple of years ago, there are a few of the donkeys and mules who live there who will always have a special place in my heart.
You may remember a blog I wrote back in July 2008 called “Luctretia, our first hinny”. Lucretia was relinquished to the Sanctuary in the summer of 1975 and she was the first hinny to come into our care.
I heard the very sad news from Andy the farm manager that she sadly passed away recently at the ripe old age of 40. She had 36 happy years being cared for at Brookfield Farm and I have many fond memories of her.
She knew her name and if you shouted “Lu-Lu” to her across the yard she would always look up and wicker a greeting. She hated having her tummy brushed or her rug done up because she was ticklish and when she started getting old, she used to fall asleep standing up. Her nose would get closer and closer to the floor and just at the last minute when you thought she would fall down she would wake up and carry on as if nothing had happened!
Although I am really sad that Lucretia has gone to donkey heaven I hope she is reunited with her best friend Clover, the mule who passed away a few years ago after a 30 year friendship. Goodbye old lady.
