Last weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting Rachel Rivers and her god-daughter Rhiannan at The Donkey Sanctuary. They'd travelled from Hertfordshire to visit a very special donkey indeed!
Rachel won our online competition to name Cinnamon’s foal in July and was making the visit to officially name him Julio and make acquaintances. If you don’t know about this story, Cinnamon was one of 18 donkeys rescued by the Sanctuary following a complaint initiated by our welfare officers in Yorkshire. She was already in foal when she arrived and Julio was thankfully born in the safety of our care and now has a Sanctuary for life.
I collected Rachel and Rhiannan from our main Sanctuary at Sidmouth and drove them over to Brookfield Farm where the rescued donkeys and their foals are living. They were in their stable when we arrived and it was cuddles all round on first sight. We invited them to make Julio’s first ever name collar and Rhiannan jumped at the chance. Kristina, one of the grooms who cares for Julio and Cinnamon, explained how to score the name into the plastic colour and Rhiannan enjoyed it so much that she offered to make collars for all of our donkeys!
Rachel and Rhiannan then led Julio and Cinnamon to their field to join the rest of the mums and foals and watched as they settled in. It was lovely to see Rachel and Rhiannan enjoying their time at the Sanctuary and we are truly grateful for their support, and to all those who took part in the original competition.
