Meet two very special mules who go by the names of Stuff and Nonsense!
Stuff is a 16 year old mule who was relinquished into the Sanctuary in 2005 with her companion Nonsense, who is 20 years old. They were bought from a market as a ride and drive pair, but ended up with us when their owners lost their grazing.
Our manager, Paul Carter, has been asking us to find some mules that may be suitable to enter into a ploughing competition, and we thought that Stuff and Nonsense would fit the bill perfectly!
Training has started this week, with some lunging practise in the round pen as well as loading practise to make sure that they are happy to go in to a horse trailer. They have both had bridles fitted too and look very smart!
We have also managed to sift through our tack and put together two harnesses which they have had fitted, and both girls were very well behaved! They seem to remember some of the training they had all those years ago, as both of them took the harness fitting in their stride!
Nonsense excelled when it came to the long-reining and behaved beautifully, like she had never been away from driving! Stuff was slightly more jumpy and playful, but she soon settled too!
We are hoping to have both girls ready for the next ploughing competition, so work will continue with them every week. With their fantastic behaviour this week we also hope that they will soon be accepted for the foster scheme and can find a loving home!
