My name is Jenna and I am going to start writing a blog to tell you about life at Town Barton Farm which is part of the Sanctuary. I have been working as a groom here since January 2009 and previously I was at university studying for my degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare, which gave me some of the knowledge I need to work with all the mules and hinnies we have here.
Currently we have 142 donkeys and 139 mules, hinnies and ponies, and after a long, hard winter, the recent good weather has been gratefully received and the animals are enjoying the first turnout of the season this week when they all get the chance to go out into the fields after the winter months.
Turnout is my favourite part of the year, even though it means a lot more walking and work for the grooms to rotate groups and help manage the pasture, it is worth it to see how much the mules and donkeys enjoy galloping around and playing in the sun.
Preparations for Donkey Week are now well under way, the boys have been busy pressure washing and preparing the shelter sites for summer turn out and the girls have been clipping, trimming and sprucing up the mules and donkeys, so they look at their best for your visit.
