Before I came to work at the Sanctuary, I had no idea what a mule was and I had certainly never seen one! As soon as I set eyes on one of these amazing animals I wanted to know more about them and work more closely with them. I have recently joined the British Mule Society to learn more about these lovely animals and meet other like minded people.
The first mule I worked with was called Wellington, it wasn’t as I expected, as I had no idea how intelligent mules were, he outsmarted me a good few times! After spending a lot of time with Wellington his behaviour improved and he joined the foster scheme and Wellington now lives happily with his friend George in a foster home. The Sanctuary fosters out pairs of mules/donkeys to suitable homes. Support and advice is always available and they are visited at least 3 times a year by an area welfare officer.
Here at the Sanctuary we have 155 mules and hinnies in our care. 108 of these beautiful animals live at Town Barton Farm, one of our farms situated in Tedburn St Mary, Devon.
