I always enjoy visiting Newton Farm, one of our holding bases, in Buxton, Derbyshire as it is such a beautiful part of the country. Although this farm is not normally open to the public, we are hoping to have an open day next summer to give more people the opportunity to visit the farm.
While I was there, I saw several donkeys that are of interest, particularly a little elderly mare called Lucky who has impaired vision and had one eye that was continually weeping and ulcerating.
Lucky has, very innovatively, had a contact lens fitted by Laida, the local vet. This is now protecting the eye and reducing the problems with ulceration. I had never heard of fitting donkeys with contact lenses before and it was absolutely fascinating to see.
