Marie Lee recently celebrated her 40th birthday with a party and asked friends and family for donations in lieu of gifts to help raise funds for the Sanctuary. Before the guests left, they all shared a slice of Marie's birthday cake which had been beautifully decorated with a picture of her very much loved donkeys - Blister and Joss-George.
I contacted Marie to ask her about Blister and Joss-George and received this wonderful reply which she is happy for me to share with you.
"Blister and Joss-George are two inseparable donkeys - Joss-George being the calming influence as he is 10 years older. Blister being a much bigger donkey tries to boss him around, especially at meal times but he stands his ground and they take it in turns to hurtle around their paddock chasing one another in and out of the trees. Their favourite pastime is sawdust rolling - I'm sure they have competitions to see who can get most on their back!
We used to put the donkeys in a paddock opposite our house during the day - which entailed mornings and evenings a walk down our lane - from their usual field. They were never in a hurry to go down the lane - always lots of nice lush grass to nibble on along the way!
One morning my husband was taking them - and was in a bit more of a hurry than normal - and shouted at Blister who was dilly dallying as usual. Unfortunately, Blister took umbrage at this and took off as fast as his feet would carry him - followed of course by Joss-George. My poor husband - who was in between them - just had to go too (completely dragged off his feet - but he didn't let go of the lead reins!) I think the thought of having to tell me he'd lost my donkeys was even more scary to him!
Thankfully they ran straight into the paddock and all was well (apart from husband with arms a few inches longer and scraped knees!)
I had a wonderful 40th birthday with lots of treats - including a day as a zookeeper where I fed the giraffes and kangaroos by hand. I'm so glad the Sanctuary could benefit too - albeit in a very small way. You all do such a wonderful job."
