At The Donkey Sanctuary we love to see fit and healthy donkeys working on Britain’s beaches, especially when, for many children, the beach is where they see a donkey for the first time in their lives.
Throughout the country we see high standards of beach donkey care, their welfare maintained and/or improvements made each year. We believe that, where appropriate, beach donkey operators should be recognised for their contribution to good animal welfare practice. To do this, in 2003 we organise an annual competition to seek out Britain’s Best Beach Donkeys.
In line with the annual re-licensing and/or general health checks, a Donkey Sanctuary Welfare Officer visits three times between May and August to carry out judging to find the Best Individual Beach Donkey and the Best Group of Beach Donkeys in various areas around the country. The results of these regional awards are announced and the winners then compete for the national awards.
