On the 25 November 2015 The Donkey Sanctuary is celebrating 40 years of providing donkey assisted therapy.
40 years ago the vision of The Donkey Sanctuary's founder Dr Elisabeth Svendsen began a journey which has since given happiness to many donkeys, children and adults.
Our founder, Dr Svendsen, had the idea of bringing together children with additional needs, and donkeys who were healthy and happiest when socialising with humans… so in November 1975 she set out to make this dream a reality.
Donkeys were transported to local schools, and donkey assisted therapy began in the playgrounds and school fields.
The project now gives over 50,000 therapy sessions a year.
Over the last 40 years, the charity’s donkey assisted therapy programme has grown and now gives over 50,000 donkey assisted therapy sessions a year.
Through these projects in the UK and overseas the lives of children and adults with additional needs are immeasurably improved by the emotional, mental and physical therapy that close contact with these rescued donkeys provides and the donkeys also benefit from the stimulation and contact.
