2011 was an incredibly busy year for The Donkey Sanctuary, with record numbers of animals coming into our care. This was particularly noticeable in Northern Ireland, with our team of welfare officers being asked to take in more and more donkeys as their value at market dropped and owners were unable to afford to pay for their care.

Simply donkeys... just for you!
As we come to the end of 2011, we've put together a compilation of images taken at the Sanctuary to thank you all for your support throughout the year.
Whilst 2011 brought us sadness with the loss of Elisabeth Svendsen, the joy of new life was born to mares who came into our care already in foal.
Millie the mule, what a show girl!
Hi there, it's Sara here. Everybody has heard the saying ‘Stubborn as a mule’, but having worked with these animals and read the history on them, I really think this saying needs to be re-addressed. It is by far a case of intelligence, meaning mules are able to out-smart people, leading the handler to think they are being ‘stubborn’.
Summer tour comes to a close
Something which has been quite new to me this summer was taking part in the foster welfare workshops which ran all over the country throughout the months of April to October. Our last workshop took place this week in Manchester; the first one took place at the beginning of April at Paccombe Training Centre here in Devon.
Frosty's little antics
I was down at Paccombe Farm last week looking for a cheeky little donkey story for a national magazine. I met Frosty and caught her little antics on video. Thought I'd share it with you.
Frosty is 32 years of age and lives with our 'oldies' group on the farm and has been living here at the Sanctuary since 2003 when she was relinquished into our care.
