After three weeks of intensive veterinary treatment, I am excited to reveal that little Rupert was finally declared well enough to travel from Westmorland Veterinary Practice in Kirkby Lonsdale to our sanctuary near Buxton in Derbyshire last week.
Derbyshire Centre resident donkeys
Donkeys come to our Derbyshire Centre for many reasons, some with health problems or ailments that need ongoing treatment. When 10 year old Olga arrived earlier this year with her group of Poitou donkey friends she was still recovering from fracturing her neck several months earlier.
Do you remember Sven, the beautiful chocolate brown foal born at our Derbyshire Centre in May who was named in memory of The Donkey Sanctuary’s late founder, Dr Elisabeth Svendsen M.B.E?
Well, two months on, Sven has been out making new friends with some of the other resident donkeys at our Derbyshire Centre in Flagg near Buxton.
International animal welfare charity The Donkey Sanctuary is celebrating the safe arrival of Sven, a beautiful chocolate brown foal named in memory of the charity’s late founder, Dr Elisabeth Svendsen M.B.E.
Staff from the Sidmouth-based Donkey Sanctuary were shocked to find two donkeys that had suffered seriously damaged hooves during their owner’s botched attempt to trim their feet using a carpenter’s chisel.
Jenny is a 37 year old mushroom grey female donkey who first arrived at our Derbyshire Centre in 1996 after her owners downsized their property.
Flyn is a 23-year-old grey stallion who lives alone in a separate shelter and field. He was relinquished to the Sanctuary in November 2007 as he had been suffering from serious health problems. His owner had bought him at a horse market in 2000 and allowed him to freely roam with horses and ponies.
Andy and Frankie arrived at our Derbyshire Centre in September 2008 after their owner made the difficult decision to relinquish them to our care for financial reasons.
Fabio was taken in by The Donkey Sanctuary as his owners were concerned he was too lonely. They were also struggling to deal with his increasingly poor behaviour and we believe Fabio may have experienced some sort of trauma in a former life.
